Iraq

The Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy's Iraq resolution paper agreed with the statement made by the World Council of Churches that "…the Iraq war was illegal, immoral, and ill-advised. The action is condemned as a 'breach of the principles of the United Nations Charter'".

Since the war in Iraq has begun, positive things have resulted that are not widely publicized. Millions of people have been freed from tyranny, a new government is being established, thousands of schools have been built or rehabilitated, children are receiving medical care, elections have been held, and new attitudes about democracy are spreading throughout the Arab world. On the other hand, the United Nations is under investigation for the embezzlement of billions of dollars from Iraq's "Oil for Food" program, stealing that money from needy Iraqi civilians. Countries who serve on the U.N. Security Council sold illegal weapons to Saddam Hussein before the invasion of Iraq during U.N. approved sanction periods, and may have benefited from the "Oil for Food" program's stolen funds. This creates possible conflicts of interest in the how the war was determined to be illegal as voted on by the United Nations.
