216th GAAP Committee

The 216th General Assembly Action Protest Committee is made up of representatives from 6 Las Vegas Valley Presbyterian USA Churches. The purposes of the committee were originally stated as follows:

  • Contact, obtain support and organize the Las Vegas Valley Churches in a common response to the General Assembly resolution papers, as recommended by the Advisory Committee on Social Witness.
  • Develop a plan to educate the Valley Presbyterians as to the workings of the General Assembly Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy as related to General Assembly, Synod, and Presbytery approval procedures for National Church Policies.
  • Plan and organize the scheduled December 4th presentation at MVPC by Mr. Peter A. Sulyok, Coordinator for the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy, and solicit the Valley Churches' support in participation and funding for this special event.
  • Draft and finalize a letter of response protesting the resolution paper's (specifically Iraq: Our Responsibility and the Future; the calling for the end of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank; the divestiture of investment in certain corporations involved in the reconstruction of infrastructure in Israel, and the position on Colombia concerning immediately closing the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) rationale, conclusions and suggested actions of redress.
  • Finally, long term, initiate the effort to ensure that resolution papers are properly vetted through all Presbyteries via an Overture Statement that achieves General Assembly approval to achieve the same before resolution papers are publicly posted as representing the entire Presbyterian faith.
